Islamic vs conventional banking: the key differences
This guide is educational. It explains general structural differences between Islamic and conventional financial products — it is not a religious ruling or financial advice. Verify product-level compliance on the official source for each product you consider.
The core structural difference
Conventional banking products are typically built on interest — a bank lends money and charges a rate on the principal. Islamic financial products avoid interest (riba) and instead use structures grounded in asset ownership, trade or partnership. Common Islamic banking structures include Murabaha (cost-plus sale), Ijara (leasing) and Musharaka (partnership). The economic effect can be similar, but the legal structure and basis differ.
How this affects everyday products
A conventional savings account may pay interest on your deposit. An Islamic savings account typically shares profit from an underlying asset or investment pool — the rate is not guaranteed in the same way. A conventional mortgage charges interest on the loan principal. An Islamic home finance arrangement (often Diminishing Musharaka or Murabaha) involves the bank co-owning the property or selling it to you at a marked-up price paid in instalments. Verify the specific structure of any product on its official disclosure.
Sharia supervisory boards
A bank or product that is declared Sharia-compliant should be approved by a qualified Sharia supervisory board. The standards applied differ between boards and jurisdictions. One board approving a product does not mean all boards would. If Sharia compliance is important to your decision, check which body approved the product and whether that body's methodology aligns with your own requirements.
What Qrar360 shows
Qrar360 displays the declared Sharia compliance status of a product where it has been verified from the provider's own disclosure. We do not independently certify compliance; we surface what the provider has stated. Items where compliance status has not been confirmed are flagged as unverified rather than assumed either way.
